Mike Nichols' Closer is a powerful character study based on the Patrick Marber play, a vicious romantic quadrangle that asks questions about whether it's crueler to lie or to tell the truth. (Well, it's far less cruel to NOT commit adultery, but these characters do.) Marber's heightened language is crisp and always interesting, and the film shocks the viewer into attention by crash-cutting through vast swathes of time without warning. Once a relationship starts, we might as well skip to its end. And it is more about endings than beginnings, in that sense. By the end, the characters (all very well drawn and acted, each at once morally repellant and sympathetic and relatable) are released from their obsessions by a surprising catalyst. No surprise, Nichols knows how to direct top-notch actors and structure a complex web of correspondences so the resolution is pitch perfect.
Way better than expected..I found it a surprisingly realistic and relatable look at the merit of lies and how happy relationships are built on ignorance. Great acting all round too, particularly from Julia Roberts and Clive Owen.
Pretty good, intense movie about four complex protagonists and their relationships with each other.
I really enjoyed the movie; the protagonists are all troubled or sort of messed-up people who each act in morally questionable ways or make bad decisions - but for me it was still very easy to relate to most of that.
Wonderful performances by Natalie Portman, Jude Law, Julia Roberts and Clive Owen.
Funniest scene:
Jude Law's character having a very erotic online chat with Clive Owen's character, the latter believing he's chatting with a woman :)
It's the only way to leave. I don't love you anymore. Goodbye.
Yeap a lot of sex, but what isn't every relationship is build up on sex and then crashed down on sex.. i think this movie explore from different angles the problems in relationships.. i think if you didn't get it, its 'cause youre very lucky and your never had relationships disputes
