Almost shockingly good, can't believe I've waited this long to catch it.
Great story, exciting and well told, absolutely beautiful, great voice work. In fact, there was nothing wrong or bad about it. Maybe the only thing that one could hold against it is that it's really not a movie for younger children as even the adults are creeped out. :)
this film gave a complicated feeling to me. it's like magical, creepy, mysterious, dark, serene. It makes you feel young but you can't really say it's a kid's film. i can't really describe it. i feel weird. just watching the opening of this film gives me goosebumps. it looks innocent but dark at the same time, if you know what i mean.
The animation is stunning! A wonderfully unique, creepy and expressive art style, peppered with subtle, realistic character movements reminiscent of Ghibli's best work. Couple that with great voice work, a haunting musical score, and the irresistible storytelling of Neil Gaiman, and what you have is a true masterpiece. It's like Alice in Wonderland, with the creepiness factor cranked up to the nth degree . . . not really sure who the target audience is though.
Dammit, this movie is scary :) Looks like a children's movie somehow, but these button-eyed people, the whole atmosphere and the hidden dangers sure gave me the creeps :)
It's beautiful, though... so colorful, so interesting... great characters, lovely animation, atmospheric music and a nice message. The opening credits were extremely creepy and scary as well...
Wow, is there a They Might Be Giants song in Coraline?! There is. Another Laika Studios winner, anyway, though it would feel fresher if I hadn't also watched MirrorMask this week - it's a spin on the same idea. Coraline (one of several references to Shakespeare in the film, though how it connects to anything escapes me) just moved to a new town, in a creepy old house, and she's pissed at her parents. In her dreams - or is it reality? - she crawls into a cubby-hole and finds another house, with other parents, and is lured into the life she thinks she wants. I really like the knitted aesthetic of the other world and clearly see inspiration for each element in the real world, though I still find "reality" a bit random at times. The acrobat living on the top floor with trained mice? The stuffed dogs? The neighbor's Ghost Rider mask? They pay off, fueling Coraline's living nightmare, but I find their presence in the first place dubious. Still, with all the little details, I'm sure this is a perennial (yes, that's a pun) favorite for many, finding new connections on subsequent rewatches.
Rewatched it again for the first time in probably 10 years. Still as charming and delightful as I remember. I don't think its "too scary for kids" as others have commented on here. I think I would have loved it as a child just as I love it as an adult. Its spooky, but in a fun and harmless way like Tim Burton or the Addams family. Wonderful film and I will always enjoy revisiting it. Too bad the "exploration" song will be stuck in my head for days now...
One of the best children's films I've seen. I can't think of another film right now that I'd rather show to some young'uns, in the hope that they'd grow up to be creative, strong and optimistic old'uns.
