How do you make a biopic about someone as enigmatic as the great Salvador Dali? Well, the obvious answer is: you don't. At least not the kind of traditional, by the book biopic where we follow key moments from the subject's life in a linear fashion.
Well, anyone who knows the work of Quentin Dupieux will know right away that he's not very likely to do anything as predictable as that. So instead we get this marvellous, ingenious labyrinth of a movie, where any semblance of predictability is thrown out the window; where there are no clear lines between dream and reality. More of an anti-biopic, if anything.
Dalí himself is played by five different actors, but this isn't done in a way where there are segments from different parts of his life, and sometimes there are several Dalís in a single scene.
There's just so much to love about this movie, it's also one of the funniest I have seen in ages, and the entire cinema was laughing loudly. It may only be 77 minutes long, but it is more jam-packed than many three hour movies. If you love Dalí or Dupieux, or both, this is absolutely essential viewing. 2 months 1 week ago
