I dunno man. There's bleak, and then there's this. This is just MISERABLE, in every damn frame. Misery porn. It's not even miserable in an effectively realistic way because the story becomes unnecessarily extreme and stretches credibility towards the end. It never finds a comfortable tone, flitting between minimalist (and according to this viewer, un-involving) "slow cinema" and ham-fisted melodrama. The lead performances are pretty great and it's technically impressive, but it's all suffocated by the overbearing (yep, I'll say it again) MISERY. Very disappointing after The Selfish Giant, which was genuinely moving and relatable. 6 years 6 months ago
