The first time I saw this in my film studies class, I struggled getting into it and almost fell asleep. But then, after having a seminar on it, where we discussed the topics, the storytelling style and how every creative decision here is filled with meaning, I saw it again by myself. And the second time I fell in love with it. I even cried a couple of times. I think - at least in my case - that this is a film where it is worth doing some research beforehand and knowing a little bit about what you're about to see (which is the opposite of how I usually like to enter a film world), like the culture, history and traditions of the Gullah people. But for this beautiful and powerful film, it is worth the extra effort. 2 years 7 months ago -

I just couldn't get into it. I prefer a Les Blank documentary about that Gullah guys. 4 years 3 months ago -

A wondrous, dreamlike, lyrical exploration of a Gullah family a century ago, and the pressures they faced dealing with tradition and the outside world. You feel the emotion as they wrestle with each other's views and the gaps between generations, and see how displaced people created a new life for themselves in a new land. 8.5/10, would recommend. 3 years 7 months ago
