It's incredible how attitude/opinion can change in time - originally i found this film to be disappointing, but upon recent re-watch i find it very unique - hardy anything dislike-worthy about it.That mall setting is such a great idea and do not accept those fast-moving zombies from remake. These ones are the real thing - and i say this as someone who enjoyed playing video game Left 4 Dead.
Original Night still remains a classic, not sure i would put it over or below Dawn,
but i will say this: colorized '68 original and Argento's edit/cut of Dawn are on the par in my world.
And, and, and... Day still remains my fave as it always has been.
While there are semi-gems from Romero like Martin,
it's his original Dead trilogy that is a real highlight of his filmography.

You've heard of slow burns, well Romero's Dawn of the Dead isn't THAT. We start in crisis mode and we hardly ever leave it. The apocalypse is in full swing, and we'll end up following a couple of television news people and a couple of deputized undead hunters. The eventual setting is a classic, the movie having fun with "mall zombies", but I'll admit I was a little tired of zombie-killing gags by the middle of the picture. There's so much of it, I'd almost call this a procedural. It's when it asks "what then?" that it gets interesting for me. How do you survive and even thrive during a zombie apocalypse once society has well and truly broken down. It's in that only "slow burn" portion that we really get to know the characters and care what happens in the action-packed third act. An often-emulated classic, but it still retains much of its power.buc86
People lay into modern CGI for looking even slightly fake, so why does no one lay into the effects in this film? Surely they didn't even look good for the time!lucafilm
This movie is terrible. It took me 3/4 times to finish it.Directing and acting is totally childish. Don't want to see tomato sauce or similar as blood. What can be relevant is humans inside a supermarket trying to survive, kind of surreal western zombie movie that is kind of cool. But beside that it is just crazy stuff, i mean you can't just have a good idea without the rest. Not recommended

best of the trilogy :PLoved the obvious commentary on consumer capitalism; ironic humour

This film is delightfully atrocious.BarryAllen

To this day, I can't look at a blood pressure kiosk without smiling. You may have to watch the extended cut "Ultimate Edition" (longer than the Director's Cut) to get my meaning.MathianSim
I have often fantasized about holding up in a mall, kickin' zombie ass.Warrison

I was surprised how cheap the production felt and how high budget the story felt.devilsadvocado
I think the scene where the biker gang runs around throwing pies in the faces of the zombies is the perfect reflection of just how terrible this movie is. What a fucking joke, to say this is genius--in terms of craft, story, message, or in any regard. Just a horrible, horrible movie.AdGuzman
well, it was so much fun, really!mysteryfan
