I enjoyed this, but can't help but feel like it's also a bit of a missed opportunity. I loved the crystalline, pristine style, and the action scenes were filmed beautifully and viscerally, which only makes it more of a shame that we didn't get to see what the filmmakers would have made of the actual heist. Even if it was just a brief five minutes at the start I think it really could have improved the movie, but I guess budgetary constraints got in the way. That being said, the cold open (ha) is still very effective, and sets the tone for what is to come, even if the movie doesn't reach the heights of the opening sequence again in its duration (also known as Skyfall Syndrome).
Bana is fantastic in the lead, particularly in the hostage scenes, and Wilde does the best with what she's given, but they're let down by surprisingly poor acting from some supporting cast members, in particular Mara, who is capable of better, and Hunnam, who isn't. These lacklustre performances are accentuated by very unnatural dialogue and two terribly forced and cliched family relationship subplots involving the aforementioned actors that only serve to break up the otherwise faultless pacing of the film.
I've been mostly critical, but that's only because I really did feel like this was on the verge of being something truly great and was disappointed that it never quite got there. When Deadfall works, it works spectacularly (see the pre-title sequence, the consistently inspired cinematography, and the tense build up to the climax), but it is let down by a few elements that are so noticeable that they really do detract from the experience. Still though it's a somewhat low-key and decidedly grounded thriller with a very strong lead performance and moments of sheer brilliance, all taking place in a beautiful setting, which makes it well worth the watch. 10 years 4 months ago -

Good little crime drama with a great Eric Bena. Kris Kristofferson is sadly un used. 11 years 1 month ago -

I felt like something's missing here. It's not that bad, but it's no masterpiece at all. 11 years 2 months ago
