   Ayna / Der Spiegel / The Mirror (1984), shot in Greece. as a co-production between Germany and Britain during Erden Kıral's years of self-exile in Germany, is based on Osman Şahin's psychological drama, Beyaz Öküz / The White Ox about woman and their repressed desires in patriarchal societies. The opening shots - the storm. the rain and t he long silences - set the tone of a dark story of desire and death. The precarious life of a peasant couple is disturbed when the omnipotent landlord’s whimsical brother (Hikmet Çelik) tries to seduce beautiful Zelihan (Nur Sürer) by throwing a flower into her pail. She throws the flower out with the water as if to cleanse her shame, but her face reflected in the mirror cannot hide the passion stirred. Her husband Necmettin (Suavi Eren) kills the man to restore his honour and they bury the corpse inside their home. Zelihan identifies the family ox with the dead man and begins to caress the animal.
   
   Despite the theatricality of the dream sequences and the cow slaughter episode. the poetic drama created through the outstanding photography and the minimalist style in exposing the position of women as nonentities in a feudal system that devours the less advantaged brought the film several national and international awards. 7 years 5 months ago
