Dramatic, sentimental, and visual bombast. Woo not only gives us visually coherent, beautiful action sequences at the height of his directorial talent, but blends in critique and a myriad of cultural iconography with powerful results. His best work, and a tough film to respond to.
Bah, not really what I'd call a great film. The first half is so overly cheesy. I mean really, the overload of cheese prevented me to connect with the characters in any way, thus ruining much of the story.
After a while, the action and Woo's trademark style kicks in and the movie is moderately entertaining but the closer to the end it got the more nonsensical it became.
It was way too ambitious for its own good, it tries to capture the atmosphere of Vietnam War but to me it just looked like the work of a man who has seen Deer Hunter too many times.
To put it briefly, Killer had a better story, Hard Boiled had better action and this is somewhere in between, all while failing to resonate in any way.
