After several years and several rewatches, I realized this is one of my favorite movies. Tarantino and his crew made a wonderful and enjoyable movie.

This holds up better than I remembered and is really only let down when Tarantino indulges in references and in-jokes. As always Tarantino is at his best when he plays it straight, or if not straight then working in service of the narrative rather than winking at the audience. Because he is undoubtably a master filmmaker when he’s not being self indulgent, capable of bringing more joy to an audience than virtually any other filmmaker working today. With Django he works very well with the troopers off the genre, always making sure to exceed them as with his never-more-violent shootouts.

Great Western with a superb cast! Good story and violent action and a lot of Tarentino gimmicks :-)

It wouldn't be Tarantino movie if some scenes weren't incredibly ridiculous and completely over the top. However, entertaining movie. I quite liked it.
Incredible cast! They really pulled it together.

I'm struggling with writing a review of Tarantino's Django Unchained. On the one hand, it's a terrific entertainment, violently rewriting history like Inglourious Basterds did, and on the other, it's a disturbingly difficult subject. Imagine if Basterds had taken place in a concentration camp, and you get the idea. It's slavery through a blaxploitation filter, a badass but brutal revenge western that threads the fine line between the comic and the horrific. Christoph Waltz once again steal the show as the German dentist/bounty hunter who takes Django (Jamie Foxx) as a partner. The weakest link is Samuel L. Jackson whose dialog feels anachronistic to me. At 165 minutes, the film feels a bit heavy, and keeps going after you think you've reached the last reel. Not sure what I'd cut out of it though. There's no scene that's not crucial to the plot, themes or tone. This isn't a negative or even a mitigated review, I really did love it (heck, I could have listened to the opening song for 2 hours). I guess I'm still not sure how to resolve its handling of race (the period and characters are unavoidably racist) as both comedy and drama, in relation to my feeling "entertained".

Django is awesome! A great story simmering with tension. It plays like a classic western until the inevitable Tarratino cataclysm. Stylish and witty. I haven't enjoyed a film like that for a while.

To greenhorg: The state of South Carolina declared its secession on December 20, 1860, which led to the creation of the Confederacy, and could be considered the beginning of the Civil War, so technically, Tarantino is right.

highly entertaining but emotionally unengaging and far too long slave revenge fantasy, complete with weak script and historical inaccuracies

I got to say I really liked this movie. The story had a nice pace to it, the actors were great and some scenes were just hilarious. It was gripping and great fun at the same time.

Christoph Waltz was absolutely amazing in his role, so funny and original - a really well-deserved Oscar. Samuel L. Jackson was incredibly odious - just like Leo DiCaprio. Wonderful cast, nice ideas, good action. Cool!
