This film was entirely improvised. There was no script, and the only things the actors and the crew had was a vague outline of the order of events that the director wanted to happen. 10 years 8 months ago -

The ~6 IMDb rating is a real shame, I thought this was a great movie. Everything has a very organic and realistic feel to it, especially the dialogue, which is unsurprising given that it was entirely improvised. All the actors involved give fantastic performances, with Olivia Wilde probably at a career best here, but the standout is Jake Johnson, who is phenomenal as Luke. It's a simple and low-key story well told, and you could do a lot worse if you're looking for a relaxing comedy/drama that steers well clear of clichés (apart perhaps from the initial premise) and opts for substance rather than style. 10 years 8 months ago -

Drinking Buddies is a drama about relationships where each scene is completely improvised. Naturally, I'm interested. What the quartet of actors successfully achieve, within the director's loose framework, is well-judged realism. They follow the interpersonal chemistry where it leads them, have reactions we recognize as real, and both respond or ignore cues according to their characters' level of cluelessness. The big winner in the cast, for me, is Anna Kendrick, who most seems like a real person, someone not in a movie. The plot is simple, but doesn't follow formula, and is essentially triggered when two brewery employees bring their significant others to a cabin in the woods and sparks fly in the wrong direction. From there, cinematic expectations become less important than actual human behavior, which makes the film worthy of note. 7 years 5 months ago
