I think there's actually only one major problem with this film; There's too much material to cover everything in one go.
There was a lot of exposition, a lot of scenes felt rushed and many things simply weren't covered. I can imagine some bits from the book had to be cut, but it didn't feel right to me that the Fremen culture wasn't explored at all.
Otherwise I don't think the film is all that bad. The acting was all right and some of the special effects looked really good. Most notably the worms, which, frankly, surprised me a little.
I loved it :-D Incredible special effects and set designs. The acting is outstanding. Lynch adds his special flair to the movie and I think it is challenging to watch for most viewers because of it. The best thing about this movie is that it is 100 % unique. Nothing exists that is similar to it.
I advice everyone to check out Dune - The Alternative Edition Redux, which is a magnificent 178 minutes fan edit - without a doubt the best version of this film.
Watch Spicediver's Alternative Edition Redux fanedit - it fixes all the issues of the original work and makes Dune into the great experience it was meant to be.
Lynch's reach was far greater than his grasp. 80's-era FX didn't look good when challenged like this; and plot was much too dense for its running time (any film that needs this much narration, to say nothing of VO thoughts, is doomed
The only problem with this film is it's brevity. Don't know how anyone can think a film with this amount of material and only 2 hours 15 in length is too slow. With the material in just the adapted script I think Lynch could easily have made a part one and two of 2 hours length each.
Though visually arresting, it is largely undecipherable, and does not respect the novel enough for my tastes. Often just gross, I much prefer the television mini-series of the same name.
Sorry, but I don't understand why people hate this movie so much. I'm not even a crazy fan of the books ( I still have to read them), but I thought the story was so captivating and I don't think David did such a terrible job. It seems that there was a lot of material to work with, and obviously, he had to make cuts and stuff. I loved the film, tho! There were some beautiful scenes, the characters and the way the film developed was very peculiar and unique. I'm just happy I saw this despite of all the negative comments.
For me, that I have not read the book, seeing the extended version (177 mins) was largely clarifying of the story, compared to when I saw the standard version (137 mins) in which I did not understand a rubber mallet.
Waaaaaay too much world-building going on instead of just focusing down on the main story and characters, which makes the whole film drag out and means there's a lot which goes unresolved. I'm a massive Lynch fan, but this really didn't work for me.

Jodorowsky and H.R. Giger are still alive. It's not like they still can't make another version.Looks like there's a documentary about their original attempt coming out this year:
