For those of you interested in watching it at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, here is some info:
Parking is $8. Museum tickets are $20. Open 10am-5pm except Monday. Open until 10pm Friday.
Even if you aren't the biggest Warhol fan, the museum is pretty solid. Campbell's soup cans, Jacqueline Kennedy, Paint by Numbers, cats drawn by Warhol's mom, and everyone's favorite: Sky Clouds (5th floor).
Empire is playing on a big screen on the 6th floor. You can watch Sleep and Henry Geldzahler (not on IMDB) at the same time. There are four reasonably comfortable chairs. You can bring a book or laptop, but not food. However, for the hardcore checkers, please be aware that this version is actually just the first ~100 minutes, looped, not the complete film.
To watch the full version you'll need to head down to the 4th floor and find the little film room on the side. While you are there you can also check off Eat, Kiss, and Blow Job. In fact, there are enough screens to have them all playing at once, if it isn't busy and you move around to keep the motion detectors active.
Empire is every bit as boring as its reputation. It actually plays a little slower than realtime. If you want to see the two "highlights" the lights come on at 0:41 (the climax) and turn off at 6:52 (after which you are staring at pretty much a black screen). There are supposedly some brief moments where you can see Warhol in reflections, but I did not catch these. You can easily jump around on the timeline in the film room.
This is concept art, and you can get the concept without suffering through the full 8 hours. If you are looking for someone who watched this to give you permission to skip it or "get away with" an excerpt, I hereby grant you permission. Life is too short as it is :)

I only wanted to find great people and let them be themselves... and I'd film them for a certain length of time and that would be the movie."
I have my theory, I'm not saying this is "too deep for common-folk", but I just think the intention of this movie is not being "fully watched"
If you watched this movie completely, staring on the screen without blinking, you missed what I think to be the whole point. And sorry to say, I think you are pretty much a strange person.
If you were in the same landscape as Warhol had been when he filmed this movie, you wouldn't look at the Empire State Building for 8 hours.
Now, imagine you are the one that lives in a place with a privileged view to the ESB; you wouldn't need to watch the building all the time to realize it is there, because in between your daily life, you would cross with that view, a possibly unconsciously admire it. The same effect a landscape has on the individual, could be applied to this experiment by Warhol, you don't need to watch it all the time to realize the movie is there, you don't need to have your eyes fixed on the screen to be certain you haven't "lost" any detail, you just need to be certain that the movie is being there.
Movies like this are useful for the viewer to question what the verb "to watch" could mean when comes to movies. How long your eye can take looking at the same picture? (even tho it is a moving picture). And how long it takes for you to get boring of something majestic and potent as the ESB?
Like @45MinuteZoom mentioned, the best way to watch is to see the original in the museum, but the museum isn't even opened for as long as the movie plays.
An ideal experience would be to have the movie, put it on your screen, and leaving it playing as you live your daily life, from time to time, you would realize the movie is playing, and watch it for some moments.
Relieve yourself from the dogmas of "watching it intensively".

You can watch all of it on a computer, but the museum is only open longer than 7 hours on Fridays. Make sure you set off the motion sensor every once in a while or it will stop play and you'll have to find your spot again.
OK people.. before I face this.. what do you consider to be the rules for claiming a valid tick...
- I must be sat down, eyes on the screen all the time, pausing play to go to the toilet, put the kettle on etc
- Popping out to the toilet, cup of tea etc is acceptable. I mean, come on, if it was screened at some art venue, you aren't allowed out??? That raises some deeply unpleasant thoughts.
- Have it playing in the background whilst you get on with your life at home.. This includes cooking /eating / washing up, listening to the radio, reading the paper, maybe even watching another film with frequent looks at Empire.
- put it on, go shopping, have a sleep, go on holiday

- and finaly.. is watching it at FF speed acceptable?
b_n is correct, it is a loop. Pause at 3:32, there is a black bar to the left of the top of the tower. You can see that same black bar at 1:39, 3:05, 4:12, etc. The flashes and distortions on the print or also the same leading up to the black bar. If you sat through all 8 hours of that, you've been duped, it's not the whole movie.
Watched the link that Pinheiro posted; I believe it's an 8 hour loop of the hour-long excerpt available on the "Andy Warhol: 4 Silent Movies" DVD.
But I sat through both of those, so I checked this beauty.
I've seen this on an exhibition called Motion Pictures. It helped to go there after a busy day, just sit and watch. I actually sat through the whole movie. Helped me clear my head.
