felt much more cohesive, with a tighter narrative structure, more believable character motivations, and more fluid pacing, than the original series. clearly a refined second take on the series for anno, now backed with a sufficient budget.

It just felt like a very long recap with a few improvements here and there while I was watching..

It's more for the fans of the anime. Since, this movie and the the three sequels that (will) follow it are a remake of the original anime series. Evangelion has an extremely psychological basis, and it's quite ambiguous and metaphorical. With the original series being confusing enough in itself, this movie makes even less sense to those who have no previous knowledge of it's events, such as fans would.

So. Basically... I'm just saying you might not like it very much unless you're already a fan of the series, or it might not be very understandable unless you've seen the series.

You also have to take into account that this isn't a stand alone movie (though I agree with badblokebob that it works as one), since it will have three succeding sequels. I'm just saying that there will be a lot of unanswered questions.

Rather enjoyed this myself - it works surprisingly well as a standalone movie considering its roots (albeit a "standalone movie" in the same way something like Fellowship of the Ring is).

But I fail to see what's "too philosophical" about an ending that (merely) involves firing a sniper rifle-esque weapon, rescuing a colleague, and a who's-this-guy-and-what-does-he-know cliffhanger...?

I haven't watched Neon Genesis Evangelion in 12-15 years, but Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone retreads material from the early episodes and revives some very clear memories. The animation is redone, yes? In some cases, exactly the same in higher definition/widescreen I guess. It very much feels like Anno is re-stating the set-up - albeit with more budget and special effects - before allowing himself to make the big changes over the next few films. At least, I hope that's the case because it just feels like I'm rewatching the old show at this point in the sequence. The old show, but rushed to include the necessary story beats. The "Living with Misato and Pen-Pen" stuff particularly suffers because it's cut so short. Shinji's introduction to Pen-Pen is one of my favorite bits, a rare funny moment in the series straight out of the original, but it's an odd tonal shift in a movie that has no time for this sort of thing. As of 1.0, Anno hasn't proven there's a need for remaking Evangelion...

You know there's more than one movie?
And that they had to sum up an intro that would set up the rest of the alternate take on the story?

And that it can't be 5 hours long?

I hate it. I like the series and it happened that episodes 1-6 is my favorite part of it. But this remake is nothing but a huge dissapointment.
First of all, most of the little touching moments from the series, that made it heartwarming (kind of) and likeable were lost, but those that still were there seemed too forced and rushed. Why did they include the part where Misato stares at naked Shinji for two minutes, but exclude for example the part where Shinji meets Aida while he was gone, or that part where Rey pilots Eva for the first time after she recovered (in episode 5 it works so great, even though it is so simple). Shinji's classmates were so ignored, which is sad, because they are kind of my favorite characters in the series. It doesn't even feel like they become friends with Shinji, because they didn't get enough time.
Also, it was strange to watch it, because it doesn't looked like a movie. it was more like a bunch of episodes combined into one (but wait... that's what that is). You can even guess where the episode ends and beggins even if you didn't watched the series.
All in all, it looks like this movie was made for absolutely no reason and also managed to fail drastically. Now I wonder why do a lot of Evangelion fans like it? Better fights? Explotions? It might be true that it has better graphics, but less heart for sure.
Oh, and the ending titles. Where did "Fly me to the Moon" go? Instead they put some annoying pop song. And that sucks.

this quadrilogy is a funny (well not really, saddening is the word) example of a movie that is made FOR the fans, but guaranteed to piss the fans off. watch the series (or read the equally good manga) and ignore this garbage, it´s nothing more than bad fanfiction in my eyes. source: I´m a hardcore eva fan.

Liked 90% of the movie and then was SORELY dissappointed by the ending. Got WAY to philosophical for my tastes.
