Wong Kar-wai discussing the film: "[T]he role of Tony in the film reminds me of Jimmy Stewart's in Vertigo. There is a dark side to this character. I think it's very interesting that most of the audience prefers to think that this is a very innocent relationship. These are the good guys, because their spouses are the first ones to be unfaithful and they refuse to be. Nobody sees any darkness in these characters – and yet they are meeting in secret to act out fictitious scenarios of confronting their spouses and of having an affair. I think this happens because the face of Tony Leung is so sympathetic. Just imagine if it was John Malkovich playing this role. You would think, 'This guy is really weird.' It's the same in Vertigo. Everybody thinks James Stewart is a nice guy, so nobody thinks that his character is actually very sick."

Bottomless romantic tension, lush colours, exacting cinematography, a very 'unspoken' score...very good...

My personal favorite film and it has been since I first saw about seven years ago. This is where I sat up and realized the potential and possibilities of film as something that could be artistic and meaningful. After I saw this, it kickstarted my craze over film. Collecting and watching films (at home and in the theater) has become my greatest passion. It opened so many doors for me and I have discovered so many gems. There are certain films where, if I just see a still from the movie, I get overwhelmed with feelings and remembrances. This is one of them for me.

A love story for an adult that has actually experienced love and all its bittersweet disappointments and dead-ends. Would have to disagree with the poster below me, of all WKW's films, this is his masterpiece.

The final scene is like a kick in the gut. This film sneaks up on you, or at least it did to me. The more time that passes, the more I think of this film. And if that's not a filmmaking success, I don't know what is.

Beautiful art direction and photography, but I found the characters and love story to be deeply uninvolving and uninteresting.

Aesthetically near perfection in my view. Great use of music and colours. Simple story but keeps drawing you in because of the visuals.

Wong Kar-Wai's In the Mood for Love is the masterwork of my favorite director, and stars two of my favorite actors - Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung - that hardly matters. It's the kind of film that begs to have every frame analyzed, but I won't do that here. The almost-affair between the two leads in the repressed Hong Kong of 1960s captures an era I know nothing about, but is also full of inventive directorial touches. It's an amazing film if you're into art house.

Why does this always have to be on the Top 250 bubble, it's one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen, and probably my favourite romance film ever. Wong Kar-wai's masterpiece.
