The best film Disney ever made (not counting the Pixar collaborations). Challenging, ambitious, creative, risky. Too bad the risk didn't pay off for them. The "sequel" Fantasia 2000 is pretty good, too.
I remember feeling incredibly cheated when I rented this video as a kid. The cover of the videotape looked cool, the back of it promised stories about dinosaurs, devils and wizards, thus I thought this movie was going to be awesome.
Then the movie itself turned out to have no proper story at all, just dancing brooms and boring music my parents listened to. Haha, I was appalled. This movie should not be seen by children ;).
When I saw it just now I appreciated it for it's experimentation, animation (some scenes are very imaginitive), and music. I'm sorry to say I still found it rather boring though.
An interesting exercise of synesthesia.
It's basically a sequence of 7 short animations illustrating classical music themes.
I adored the most poetic ones: Nutcracker Suite and the Pastoral Symphony.
The last one, which is made on 2 pieces of music (Night on Bald Mountain and Ave Maria) is very powerful too.
I found the other ones rather boring, or just OK.
But I'm no music lover...
One of Walt Disney’s most ambitious projects and it paid off in my opinion. It won’t be loved by all, but to those it speaks to will love it. Whenever I watch it, I’m fascinated by a certain sequence and turned off by another, but my opinion will change on the next viewing depending on my mood. Regardless, I feel this is one of Disney’s greatest triumphs in filmmaking and will always cherish it.
An astonishing breakthrough in studio-production, with an army of creatives all allowed fullest expression. Excepting the Pixar collaborations, it was a decline into bland mediocrity for Disney after this.

Nice music and animation, but it was really dull...Nine99
Can't share the praise on this one. Some well-known classical music pieces with some animated scenes. Not that spectacular.Hippiemans
'The Sorcerer's Apprentice' is by far the best part.dirte_lawndre
Pretty much a showcase of Disneys talents, I wouldn't call it a film but a exhibition or a 2hr long music video. Least favourite of all Disney flicks.ascannerdarkly
