There are aspects I liked and aspects I didn't. All of the spells and sorcerery and all of the creatures were a delight to watch. Some really funny moments, well written, lovely cinematography.
But I personally find Eddie Redmayne to be a really awkward actor, uncomfortable to watch, in all his films. Always babbling and stuttering, an awkward gait, never looking anyone in the eye.
As for the Credence/Modesty/Graves subplot, I just found that to be plain weird and the Obscurus was just a ludicrous and over the top.
Johnny Depp, go away.

It might take some time to get used to the whole wizardry world again, it doesn't have as much of a build up as the Harry Potter series had, but once you're in, it's really great. The 3D effects are nice, but sometimes instead of sucking you into the movie they kinda pull you out with the way they handled them, but that might differ per cinema and personal preference.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them may take place in the world of Harry Potter, on the American side, during the 30s, which in and of itself is a fun world to discover - more secret agents and urban mayhem than pastoral school hijinks - but it also feels like Eddie Redmayne auditioning for the role of Doctor Who. He's got the look and attitude, something like a TARDIS, and if we're being truthful, the story arc presented is much more about the Muggle/Companion who initiated to the magical world along with the audience. Doctor Who meets Men in Black with an urban fantasy spin. Enjoyable, by turns amusing and exciting, but we never get away from Rowling's episodic incident writing, nor Redmayne's now standard screen persona, and so while I'm more interested in this aspect of the Potterverse than its school system, I don't feel like it's revolutionized anything.

Really bad, Americanized version of Harry Potter. It is like most of the spin-offs or remakes made with Hollywood culture instead of the original. The HP series was brilliant but than the fame kicked in so after Goblet of fire J.K.Rowling said: "Okay, lets involve American characters in the HP universe", and that's when we got this. :( The movie doesn't know what it actually wants and you have a little bit of everything. The characters are really pointless and unlikable even Eddie Redmayne :(. and the movie tries too hard in that aspect. The fight with the bad guy in the end was so bad that when the lights come on in the theater you tell yourself "this can't be it". I am so sad i didn't like this movie. As someone said, hopefully the next parts will be better.

Was Eddie Redmayne auditioning for the role of Doctor Who? If yes I think we found the next next Doctor. The rest of the movie is garbage. What's next the touching story of how Griendelwald and Dumbledore became "best friends" Or the childhood tale of Hagrid? J.K Rowling you stole something from some one/used ghost writer(s), made a few bucks so now please go away. Johnny Depp boyo for the love of God please crawl under a rock and stay there.

I am right about these fantasy movies.. They are tiring and the same shite again and again.. This movie starts with a promise and gets irritating after a point . That actress who played Tina was the most irritating aspect of the movie and stop popping up Johnny Depp wherever you can just because he has this thing for cameos, Hollywood.

Useless, clichéd load of superhero film tropes. No imagination, thrill or interest.

Normally I don't write comments while in the middle of a movie but I'm sitting here 40 minutes in thinking "So when does this start?"

The definition of Hollywood mediocrity. Actually I'd give that to several Marvel films and the new Star Wars core film[s] (well only one so far). This is a notch above the initial description.

Great story, bad movie. As usual with Harry Potter.

Enjoyable, occasionally gets a bit dull but the strong characters really boost this film. I like that it stands on its own without owing too much to the HP series.

Eddie Redmayne's mumbly character needs to get some more chutzpah, right now he comes off as early, maximal Hugh Grant. Fantastic storyline and effects all around but there is a huge problem in the film I have which hopefully will get some closure in the next installment: spoiler

Damn this could have been a fantastic movie. The next four are going to get long! And Johnny Depp, you are everywhere, movies, in the media and music. Relax a little, take some time of, you cameo in this as one of the most famous people in the Potter universe, was not great. Eddie Redmayne is Charming, funny and all that, but the character is really hard to take serious.
The part I really liked was the dark "side story" with the adopted kids. The movie have a hard time balance all the funny things with the really dark things.

But the next part can be great and show a more mature world with the more grown up Potter fans or win whole new fans. I love this magic world. Sorry but I can't comment on this without compare it with the Potter movies.

I'm not convinced it can last 5 movies. There is just not enough.
