I think the true problem with the film is that it just can't decide which aspects of Brown's life to focus on. It's all over the place and leaves you wanting to know more about a lot of things, at least if you're of the curious kind and unfamiliar with Mr. Brown's life and music. Chadwick Boseman gives a very solid performance, and he's obviously made a huge effort to learn those complicated dance moves. Groovy, but muddled movie. 9 years 8 months ago -

Everything in this movie is on fire, from Tate Taylor's stylized direction to Stephen Goldblatt's cinematography, and ESPECIALLY Chadwick Boseman's incredible performance as James Brown. He reaches Daniel Day-Lewis levels of disappearing into his role, it's astonishing to watch.
All of this is so good that it's such a shame the film tries to pack so much about Brown's life into one movie. Characters filter in and out at the drop of the hat, several things go unexplained, and even though the film does not try to present Brown in a flattering light, certain aspects of his life (his wife-beating, his drug issues, his money problems) only have one or two scenes dedicated to them. I guess it just goes to show, no one movie can handle all of James Brown. 9 years 8 months ago
