I find the comments here a little bit harsh.
Sure the movie is a little bit long for the story it has to tell but on the other hand, so much is told here !
It's a great reflection about what success and failure are, about changing times, about love, family and destiny.
It's filled with really great moments (
When Jett comes to see the Benedicts full of oil, all the hotel inauguration scene with the storm outside
)
And I see nobody here talking about the directing ! The way George Stevens uses angles and shadows to add some visual subtext in the scenes, it's pretty great !
Oh and did I need to mention that James Dean is absolutely fascinating in every scene he's in ?!
With the exception of the cinematography, this has to be one of the worse films I have ever seen. Outdated, Horrible overacting, snail paced, muddled, barely there script & way overlong.
Bloated and unfocused, which is the worst thing a movie of this length can be. James Dean was the best part and he doesn’t even appear on screen for much. Gone with the Wind this ain’t.
I can't imagine what makes this a classic movie, beyond it having some big stars and being rilly rilly long. By the end, I just felt like this was a story about a bunch of lame characters who couldn't help embarrassing themselves whenever they're in public.

mediocre movie, carried on shoulders of James Dean and a few nice widescreen shotsTheMajor
Mediocre. It lacks dialogue and drama. Hudson's performance is unconvincing.baraka92

They had the biggest stars, the largest budget, a renowned director, an epic running time, and nowhere near enough story.Ebbywebby
