I'm not really a kaiju fan, but I must say this film entertained me more than any other I've seen from the genre. Including the original Gojira. Hedorah is a distinctive, fun monster and there's a surprising dose of vintage psychedelic/pop-art sensibility. 4 years 5 months ago

Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster AKA Godzilla vs. Hedorah features one of the Big G's most memorable and strangest monsters, created by an alien meteor, seaside pollution and mutated tadpoles (or something), in a movie that hits you over the head with its ecological message, and yet feels more like the original Gojira for it. Well, except for all the musical numbers. This is a very groovy entry in the franchise, psychedelic even, starting on a Bond film opening sequence, and follows up with frequent creepy cartoons of what's been happening with the Smog Monster. And what's that hallucinatory sequence where one of the heroes sees everyone with a fish face? It also features one of my least favorite Godzilla tropes, the little kid with the empathic/telepathic bond to the King of Monsters, this one absurdly taking part in the action, stabbing Hedorah and hanging out all night at a party on top of Mount Fuji as the monsters bear down. But Hedorah is such a mutable monster with lots of forms and tricks, it keeps the action lively, and Godzilla busy (you will believe Godzilla can fly!). For kaiju fans, you really get your money's worth, and GZ gets REALLY hurt. 7 years 10 months ago
