This is simply a movie that would not get made today. The ambition and scope of the project make it easy to see why it's one of the great movies of all time. Even for someone who is not enthusiastic about movie romances, it's worth a watch of this movie just to understand what it's all about. The technique, precision, and detail that went into this movie show on screen.Ralf
Other than a couple of key scenes, I didn't care much for this gargantuan melodrama - and I like romantic films, even the schmaltzy kind, although I realise this wasn't what one could call a conventional love story. While I agree that the movie is way ahead of its time, it's also rather pompous, and I found its two main characters completely unlikable. There was just something smug about them. And as much as I appreciate the grand production, there was nothing very striking or memorable about Victor Fleming's direction.

I've never seen a more unlikable female lead than Miss Scarlet. I'll give her this: she's a fighter and a survivor.Clark Gable is amazing.

Wow, so different of what I thought it was! It keep me on the whole 4 hours and I couldn't stop thinking of what woult it be to watched in '39.

Gone With the Wind... Timeless classic, or overrated bloat? For me, the latter. While it certainly has some nice bits of cinematography, and the second act certainly delivers cast-of-thousands-type spectacle, it can't possibly be "timeless" as it is so dated (the racist caricatures, in particular). While I can certainly accept a Civil War story told through the point of view of Southerners (the Yanks as odious villains), the film has no moral compass whatsoever, and that's bothersome. The South is presented as an idyllic paradise where slaves (the word is almost never used) are quite happy with their fates, and the merest hardships send the privileged whites to the top of the hill to shake their fists at God. Scarlett O'Hara, a selfish spoiled brat, only gets what she deserves, but we're supposed to empathize with her loss of privilege? It's undone soon enough anyway, and she never, ever learns her lesson. The film even ends on the wrong note. You might just salvage it if you turned it off after Rhett Butler's famous line, the one that echoes my feelings about the movie, you know the one I mean. Speaking of Butler, it's just Clark Gable playing the character the same way he does every character. He's a violent cad, no more sympathetic than Scarlett is. Who cares if these two get or stay together? They're just the most awful people and a poor lesson in consent. In the third act, the melodrama REALLY kicks in, and I started rolling my eyes at the fast pace of tragedies to befall the family. Novels are novels, and movies are movies. To try and adapt too much of one, make the other a rambling overdone mess. And I haven't even mentioned the terrible accents, arch acting, overcooked score (London Bridge Is Falling Down? Really?!) or clunky exposition. If this film (and novel, I guess) had more self-awareness, I might have given it a pass. As such, it thinks it's a great romance, but isn't, and gives a propagandist's sanitized view of the Old South that's proven problematic even in the 21st Century.fraukamera
I agree that this movie definitely lives up to the hype. Don't let yourself be discouraged by the length. These are four hours you will never regret! Both Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh give breathtaking performances, the story is refreshing (even if a bit cheesy and melodramatic towards the end) and the production value is outstanding.Just do yourself a favour and watch it.

I enjoyed the film but think that I'd have to read the book (and the Cliff notes) to really understand Miss O'hara's character...Ignoring the straight up melodramatic plot, I'm not sure if we're supposed to have sympathy for her or not.Let The Flames Begin
I did not watch the movie until I had finished the book. I prefer the book, but I think they did an amazing job adapting it to the screen. The movie is gorgeous and I think Vivien Leigh was an excellent Scarlett O'Hara.
Most people strongly dislike Scarlett, but I love her, for some kind of reason. Too bad they made her seem an even worse character in the movie, than how she is shown in the book.
Still, this movie is one of my all time favorites.

What a masterpiece.krakenzmama
It was near four hours but four hours worth spending. I was surprised at how much I loved it and hate myself for avoiding it for so long. From now on I will definitely watch more classics.halcain
This has been my favorite movie since I was 8 years old, and I have yet found a movie to take its place....for a very good reason.Melvelet
@Daddy Cool:There are a lot of Old Hollywood movies that are about what you call love in a traditional meaning (and I think you're right in thinking critically about that). But I wouldn't say that the love depicted in this movie falls under that definition of love. And I certainly wouldn't say that love is the most important thing about this movie. If you didn't see this movie as a love story I'm quite sure you wouldn't say say it's "soooo long" now. ;)

Simply epic. For it surely is one of the B-E-S-T movies ever made.Showing items 1 – 15 of 38
