Martin Scorsese (director) always loves details in crime films, but he is not primarily interested in the crime itself. That is why his films are always produced with details that you may see as unimportant to you, especially if you want to see the movie for the purpose of seeing scenes of theft, murder, and so on, but you see the opposite. Somewhat other details are visible on the scene mostly
The film talks about liberation, stereotypes, and entering a new world for humanity. It was Ray Liotta (Henry). He wanted, as I said, to break free from stereotypes and enter the world of gangs.
Martin Scorsese (the director) filmed this unfamiliar life and directed it in the form of a film similar to documentaries because he filmed it as if it were a real, realistic life. That is why the presence of Voice Over was important in order to give you the feeling that there is a person sitting next to you telling you the story while whispering in your ear as it happens in the movies documentaries.
really not the biggest fan. i feel like i should have enjoyed this more, it's so heavily lauded, but it barely gives us a moment to breathe, much less empathize with any of the characters.
The perfect gangster movie and Martin Scorsese's magnum opus if you ask me. Great actors that were born to play these roles. A greedy irish son of a bitch (Robert de Niro), a rude and borderline psycopathic italian manlet (Joe pesci) and an american lowlife that craves respect in the form of a tuxedo, black shoes and a gun in his pocket (Ray Liotta). Shows the luxury and brutallity of gangster life; in Karen Hill's words:
"I know there are women, like my best friends, who would have gotten out of there the minute their boyfriends gave them a gun to hide. But I didn't. I gotta admit the truth, it turned me on."
Plenty of characters with amazing evolution through the film and great cinematography. I still clench my asshole everytime I remember Robert de Niro making up his mind about killing his own gang while smoking a cigarrette in his black tuxedo, combed back hair and Cream's Sunshine of your love playing in the background, simply perfect.
The cinematography and editing are just stylish. Even though I got Taxi Driver's taste when I watched it for a second time, never got the hype around Scorsese, and now kinda I do.
"I'm gonna go get the papers, get the papers." — Jimmy Two Times
"Paulie may have moved slow but it was only because Paulie didn't have to move for anybody." — Henry
"Now go home and get your fucking shine box." — Billy Batts
"Here's a wing!" — Tommy
"Why don't you go fuck yourself, Tommy!" — Spider
"Nice!" — Jimmy
"Fucking great, what nice?" — Tommy
"What did you say? Are you being a fucking wise guy with me? Ha? What did I tell you? What did I tell you? What did I tell you? You don't buy anything, you hear me? Don't buy anything!" — Jimmy
"The fuck you're looking at? Come on, make that coffee to go, let's go! The fuck you doing? It's a joke. A joke! Put the fucking pot down. Are you gonna take the coffee?" — Tommy
Brutal reality of Mafia life. Very explicit, visually and with words. Not something I'm used to watching but I'm glad i did. The iconic actors made it a brilliant movie.
Amazing movie, so much better that the Godfather movies, the best Martin Scorsese movie along side the departed, the actors were amazing and the story fantastic, I did what Backwoods said and it makes the movie more enjoyable,I loved the movie since the first scene till the very end
5/5
