This is an extremely safe movie. They don't take chances, don't do anything surprising, and follow the same Marvel formula that you've already seen in The Avengers, Iron Man, Thor and whatever else you want to name. If you liked all that those had to offer, you'll find more of the same in store for you, here--though, perhaps not as much of it.

If I sound a bit ambivalent about the film, that's because I am. The technical production that they're putting on display is thoroughly impressive--yet, beyond that and the break-away, pop-culture, Family Guy-style gags, there's not much to sink your teeth into.

There are no wonderful character creations, like Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man or Tom Hiddleston's Loki. There is no story with a bit of deeper meaning, like Captain America 2. There are no stand-out memorable moments, like Joss Whedon gave us. It's all... very safe, almost timid. There are no risks taken; completely by the book, paint by numbers.

That's not to say that Guardians of the Galaxy is a poor film, because it's not. But it's not a particularly interesting film. I've seen it before, and seen it very recently. Swap the characters around, and you're watching any recent Marvel production. Will I remember it by next Summer? Probably not.

I can imagine in 10 years the official Top 250 list will be majority Marvel movies.

Just bad storytelling. Amusing movie, cute moments, fun moments, exciting moments, held together for no reason other than the writers decided that the actions of the individuals would best lead to the next sequence.

Probably one of the better more recent Marvel films although it seems to fall into the trap that they do. It turns into a Big Dumb Action Movie about half-way through the movie. Although this time it seems to be more character-based and feels almost like a weird mixture of The Fifth Element and Star Wars at times, that's wonderful to watch. The real star of this is Dave Bautista as Drax.

Aside from a pop-culture riffing hero, a 1970's soundtrack, a talking animal and a sarcastic and vaguely self-aware sense of humour, Guardians of the Galaxy is ripped, torn and stolen from every comic book movie of the last decade and that is what makes it truly disappointing. I try not to mention other reviews in my comments, but KuroSawWhat is precisely accurate in calling it a safe movie.

Great when it talks, but devastatingly dull when it breaks for actions sequences.

Utterly forgettable garbage with a sense of humour is still garbage.

Shame on Marvel's creative team, but congrats on their wise investment in more pablum.

If they had been invested 1/10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 of CGI budget on script that would be f.cking awesome.

Everybody seems to be loving Guardians of the Galaxy, and I'm no different. It uses the same basic formula other Marvel films do, comedy bouncing off the action and heartfelt drama, though of course, pushing the comedy a lot more. I don't know this version of the Guardians very well - I had plans to one day read Annihilation, but never did - so it took a good half-hour before I really got into it. A lot of new concepts to take in. I was moved most of the way through - look, I can't watch Rocket Raccoon on screen without thinking of that story about the film people giving Bill Mantlo a private showing and getting verklempt - but it took me a while to start laughing at the jokes. Once the seal was broken though, GotG kept me laughing and crying (not just for the Mantlo thing) and going oooh at the references to old comics. Came out of it thinking Disney had a perfect template for what their new Star Wars movies should feel like (Star-Lord as Luke, Rocket as Han Solo and Groot as Chewbacca, principally; Gamora is a post-Empire Leia and Drax is C3PO maybe, it's not important). Other will compare it to Firefly, but then, it uses Whedonistic balloon punctures, by which I mean cliché hero moments that get turned on their heads and laughed at. Nice soundtrack and score too. The kind of fun emotional roller-coaster that makes you want to get back in line immediately after seeing it.

It's like any Marvel movie but a bit raunchy and complete with jokes that any 18 year old boy would love. I was expecting more Avengers-style characters but painted with a different color brush and they kind of manage to pull that off. The vulgar bits detract from the film and while they were to showcase that this team isn't your clean cut Avengers it did seem unwelcome in a superhero movie that you'd bring your family to.

As many others have said this one's similar to the Marvel formula - the villain, the plan, the journey, but there's a far greater attention to detail, visual flare and genuine characterization that makes this one outshine it's predecessors.

Use of 80's tunes was a particularly fantastic idea.

Do you see all this convenience in writing? Especially the last spoiler. Maybe it was written for humour, but is worth it just for the joke?
I know this is a superhero movie so you should turn off your brain and just enjoy the movie as it is but all these convenience is bothering me.
On the other hand the acting is good, the visual effect and setting is superb, the soundtrack is awesome and the action scene is engaging.
Could have been a better movie if not because of all the convenience in writing.

As of today, I have seen less than five Marvel films, including this one. I was never really into comic books and honestly, the films have not impressed me besides the first Iron Man and The Avengers. Everything changed after seeing this though. A lot of people are claiming this is the best film of the year. They claiming this is the best Marvel film ever. I’ll tel you this. It is NOT the best film of the year. It is arguably the best Marvel film along with The Avengers. This is a film that has one thing going for it, something that it can claim to be unmatched by any other film released in 2014. You will not have more fun in a theater. It’s the funniest movie of the year with pretty great action sequences and special effects. I was shocked by how much I laughed. This is a better comedy than most comedies that have been released in the last five years. Believe the hype. This is the blockbuster of the year.

Like I said earlier, I had no idea what the hell the film was about before I went to the theater. I saw a trailer or two but really only remember what the main cast looked like. I’ve always been a DC person having grown up immersing myself in Batman things besides the comics. Yes I realize I’m not a true nerd by saying that. During the Marvel renaissance I tried to get into the worlds but they never grabbed me. In a way, this film was just like that. The film started and while they did a good job explaining the worlds to me, I just wasn’t grabbed. The antics from Pratt were funny throughout, but it really wasn’t until the last hour of the film where the movie went from decent to fucking awesome. Pratt is a sure fire star in the making. I’ve known this for a while now after seeing him constantly be the funniest part of Parks and Rec but this just iced the cake. Zoe Saldana seems to get cast as the ass kicking alien chick in ever single film so I wasn’t really wowed there. It was just the same routine. Dave Bautista was a scene stealer as DJax, a brute of a man seeking revenge. The ones who made me laugh the most though was the team that made the whole film for me, Rocket and Groot. Rocket, voiced by Bradley Cooper, talked way too much and Groot, voiced by Vin Diesel, talked too little. It was a perfect blend of character and the two of them provided the most belly laughs from me. There are a bunch of scenes involving Groot that had me hunched over. The supporting cast was pretty great, as we get a fantastic performance from Michael Rooker and an evil one from Lee Pace. The cast was just perfect overall.

I did’t really expect the film to be this charming either. The film opens with an emotional punch that leaves the audience reeling and then we have Chris Pratt dancing to 80’s tunes in the scene after. The back and forth between intense and powerful set pieces and goofy fun never felt exhausting. It blended together effortlessly which was to be expected from James Gunn. He was able to do the same in his previous films such as Super and Slither. He crafts serious genre films but in a style and humor that goes back and forth without losing the viewer. He was a perfect choice for this film. It’s going to be very interesting seeing what he does with the sequel, one of which I’m already waiting for.

It’s honestly hard for me to talk about this film. I don’t know the universe well and there were SO MANY scenes that had me cracking up that I just can’t talk about on opening weekend for spoiler reasons. All I can say that is the hype is real. This is one of the better blockbuster films of the last couple years and certainly the most fun you can have in a theater right now. Planet of the Apes may be a better piece of art, but Guardians of the Galaxy is just way too much fun to pass up. See it.
