Somewhat melodramatic. But you have to live through that traumatic period in China from 1966-1976 to truly understand that there are lots of realities in the film. Being 30 years old, and born in China in 84, I have to ask my parents to get some glimpses of the social landscapes back then. Reminds me of Goodbye Lenin. All in all, a simple love story without too much political elements involved throughtout, yet subtle in implications. I am going to overlook the melodrama part, and say this is the best work by Zhang Yimao so far.
Update: Aug 3 2014, after a second viewing, I think it's indeed too melodramatic in parts in contrast to the very realistic parts in the film. Therefore, I will hold back my last comment about it's being Zhang's best work, certainly not. 9 years 9 months ago -

I've read countless books on the subject, specifically the period in which the film details, and god knows I've heard some friends' personal stories from their parents, grandparents, etc. Absolute, stark-raving madness.
Great film. 7 years 10 months ago -

A very interesting film, though too slow.
What patience the husband has!! (Y) (Y)
Before I saw the film, Sweden's best China expert, a female professor Cecilia something, told us the necessary bg the last 30 horrible years before the events in the film. 8 years 5 months ago
