Terrible? This is a well-shot and very funny modern monster movie with political satire as an undertone. It is definitely a fun movie to watch, but it was different enough from a Hollywood movie to be fresh. I would highly recommend it, as well as Joon-ho Bong's other films.
Excellent movie in my opinion. Very different from any monster movie I've seen in a while. I also agree there was some great cinematography going on. Some real nice looking shots. Joon-ho Bong was good. I look forward to seeing more from him in the future.
I think when people say "Korean actors are overacting" they either don't understand Korean culture or humor or are just trolling. Perhaps the same can be said of Bollywood - in any event, this movie is very entertaining, an excellent monster movie, standard commentary about bureaucracy, pollution and family - all round enjoyable.
The first Korean film I've ever seen, but probably the 30th kaiju film I've ever seen.
The effects are fantastic, and the initial attack scene has a frantic sense of realism that adds dread.
While the sense of humor (and satirical bites) seem to give tonal whiplash from time to time, it ultimately stays closer to the "sci-fi/horror" side of things in its second half.
Gwoemul is an interesting action-drama sprinkled with satire, but it's a fantastic monster film.
Some potential here and there. Hardly ever compelling with those cgi effects which are one of the better (i guess), but still this didn't work overall. Bong's weakest film.
I'm not sure how I feel about the Korean brand of humor, which is evident in just about all of Chan-wook Park's and Joon-ho Bong's films. I don't really find it funny, though it is an interesting/amusing element of their cinematic style--although, often too silly and out of place.
I do believe this is the best "monster movie" I've ever seen. It did a great job of balancing horror movie intensity and family drama. Also, the CGI was spot on which made the monster look believable.

I was not impressed.deckard.
another overrated movie by bong. his movies always lack something.he just does not have what it takes to be a good director. his only all-right movie is memories of murder.

Humor is both, the only consolation of this wet and hairy monster film and its main weak (or leak) point.Read more in French on La Saveur des goƻts amers.
