What a beautiful film!
But I need to rant a little bit:
It is films like this that make me think of how unfortunate it is that some douchebag on this website (and I have been one too in other contexts), who has no knowledge of the Indian-Pakistani-Kashmiri context, little to no understanding of the cultural practices of the region and India in general, would club this film with some bad examples from Bollywood. It used to bother me earlier too, but I have been revisiting the recent list of good movies coming out of India and I feel bummed how much hate Indian movies get on iCM--just because they are Indian; it is like textbook ignorance and prejudice.
I understand that the problem is not just with the international audience. The thing that is not working in the favor of these films are the subtitles. In a culture where languages have merged in complex ways, generating myriad combinations of accents and dialects, topped with a dynamic musical influence--a passion injected into the veins of the country--how does one capture all those details in the subtitles? It is heartbreaking how many good films, at best, get unnoticed or, at worst, get hate because the nuance does not translate.
Finally, and then I will wrap up my rant, just because a culture does things in ways that are not "normal" for the western audience, that does not make them bad. Try to reconsider your own prejudices for Indian films before you start harshly judging them.
PS: I am aware of the trashy films coming from India out there, perhaps more than a lot of people here. But, Iet's not judge the cultural value of a whole nation based on its garbage. It is like dismissing American cinema because they made Transformers.
(there is no particular reason for me to post this rant here. I am just tired of reading shit about decent Indian films on iCM) 5 years 12 months ago -

A fine movie, but deliberately slow paced. One can watch it only for its brilliant photography, if not for the ambivalence of its characters. 9 years 6 months ago -

Vishal has totally ignored the indian Audience and showcased some brilliance where he made the onlookers believe that the hero was the villain and the villain the hero.
understand the movie, don't just watch it. 9 years 6 months ago
