I've never swayed from disliking to liking a movie as much as I did with this one. Many movies start out strong, but fail to keep it up beyond the first 30 minutes. With this one, it was exactly the opposite.
Halfway in, I had started writing some slashing sentences about how fragmented it is, that it lacks viewer involvement due to poor character development, and that apparently focusing on one good name for the movie was just as hard as focusing the story. I was, however, impressed by the casting and their performance, especially those by Val Kilmer, AnnaSophia Robb, and Stephen Root.
In light of this, the second half came as a shock surprise. The maturity of the two main characters was further extrapolated and the story took some turns that suddenly turned it in an interesting story. The blurry characters started to develop in crisp personas who truly chased their dreams. The movie turned good and very worth your while.
One thing is certain: I just don't understand how young AnnaSophia could have played roles this intricate. She uses an impressive vocabulary that she later also exploits in Race to Witch Mountain, but it puzzles me how she manages to express such emotional, social and even cynical depths, as she has also done in Sleepwaking, and in fact has always done since Winn-Dixie. 11 years 11 months ago
