Well that was a mighty depressing film. And I loved it. I even think it might be one of my favourites ever. Films are supposed to make you feel, and this one surely made me feel A LOT. I was basically going through the whole film with tears in my eyes because I knew what was coming, and I completely bawled at the end. If you're looking for a film that rips your heart out and stomps on it, then this is the right film for you.

Horrific, emotionally punishing film that reveals the ravaging and systematic, deliberate violation of conflict in a way few are willing to acknowledge. As powerful an anti-war message as Platoon, yet in a sense even more brutal as it features two children fighting for their lives in quiet desperation, with the miserable end almost a foregone conclusion. Necessary watching for those who occupy a Patton-like bravado on the issue of war's necessity. It isn't pleasant and is actually designed to break the audience in two, but in this case, poison is the cure. Still can't believe this premiered in a double bill with My Neighbour Totoro - a marketing gaffe of seismic and laughable proportions, to be sure!

It was good, but not quite as good as I was expecting. The animation, of course, is fantastic, and as with all Studio Ghibli movies the emotions are real and the characters flawed and relatable. But I must say, I found the protagonist to be a little unlikable.spoiler It was a worthwhile film, and I had heard that it was among the saddest animes ever made, but to be perfectly honest I found The Wolf Children much more emotionally effective.

The true sad thing is that this still isn't fiction.

Ivn1945 - There is a live-action version, and it's apparently not as good as this version. To me, the animation is absolutely integral to the film. It universalizes the story, and makes it that much more powerful. This is one of the greatest and most devastating films ever made, animated or otherwise.

Mrsnoops - You may like the film or what it is doing, but this film's masterful animation and storytelling precludes it from being "spectacularly awful."

I very rarely cry watching a movie. I am never stunned into silence. I don't watch credits to the end, especially not when they're Japanese.

This movie made me cry my eyes out. Despite my best efforts I was unable to speak and couldn't move to turn it off as the credits rolled.

Beautifully animated with a tragic narrative. This film goes along with other anti-war classics such as 'Schindler's List' and 'Life is Beautiful'. The emotion has hold of you from the very beginning.

This, just like any other movie, should be watched with its original audio stream, in this case japanese.
