At least with the English dubbing, I found it alternately cloying and depressing. Beyond that, an interesting and somber take on the real victims of war. Visually well done, but I suspect that the lushness of Miyazaki has spoiled me for any other Japanese animator.Marcelo Antunes

It's a well made movie, but does not make sense on many levels.And the boy could have done much better. I understand it is war time, but surely there must be some government provisions for orphans. Plus he could have and should have found a way to his relatives. The boy just did not seem to be willing enough.
It seemed that the movie makers went all guns blazing to make the movie depressing and impractical.
