Well, that hurt. I knew a bit more than I should have going in, but it doesn't really soften the blow. As many have stated, it is a beautiful, almost breathtakingly beautiful, film. But it packs a punch. An incredible meditation and commentary on war and the selfishness that seems almost inherent in all societies.
It was good, but not quite as good as I was expecting. The animation, of course, is fantastic, and as with all Studio Ghibli movies the emotions are real and the characters flawed and relatable. But I must say, I found the protagonist to be a little unlikable.
<It seemed to me that many of the problems affecting him and his sister were directly his fault. He was a prideful, and his pride ended up killing both him and his sister>
It was a worthwhile film, and I had heard that it was among the saddest animes ever made, but to be perfectly honest I found The Wolf Children much more emotionally effective.
Grave of the Fireflies is an early Ghibli classic, uncharacterstically down to earth, about a teenager who is forced to take care of his kid sister in the wake of the U.S.'s fire-bombing his town during World War II. The sensitive semi-biographical account of civilian life in the final days of the war in Japan strongly reminded me of another - Barefoot Gen, made five years earlier and also about a pair of siblings in that era. Gen was at Hiroshima, which means that film was more of a horror show, but Grave of the Fireflies is no less sad and shocking, and by a certain measure more thoughtful in its treatment. Presented as a ghostly memory that takes on more meaning on second viewing, we accompany Seita on his tragic journey to keep his family safe while he waits for a father who may never come back. Today considered the high water mark among anime studios, Ghibli started off strong indeed. Takahata's film was released in 1988, two years after Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky and the same year as My Neighbor Totoro.

I would never believe to cry like a hell for an anime…I did…PolarCow
I was crying 4 minutes into the film - it’s that good/sad... Really heartbreaking!Typically Thomas
I very rarely cry watching a movie. I am never stunned into silence. I don't watch credits to the end, especially not when they're Japanese. This movie made me cry my eyes out. Despite my best efforts I was unable to speak and couldn't move to turn it off as the credits rolled.
