Saccharine perhaps - terrible, inert and plodding definitely not. Melodramatic but in a positive sense. I quickly grew to care about these people and found this tearjerker far suprior to its modern equivelents.

What a beautiful film celebrating beautiful people, beautiful on the inside, of course - their strength of character and sense of family and duty. A meaningful film that aims at your heart and wins over your soul.

@Zuma I didn’t like the anti-education message either but the message couldn’t ruin the movie at all. As a movie it was great.

Wonderful cinematography ruined by the anti-education message and close-minded "values".

I'm afraid I agree with filmcave. This movie is way too melodramatic. It's also disgustingly moralistic, with its very conservative view on social issues.

This is frankly, terrible. Saccharine, cloying, inert and plodding. It's what people who refuse to watch "old movies" fear that they are. A dreadful, painful watch. The sets are brilliant and the direction sound, but this is a worthless film.
