At times it feels rather "meh" with all the clichés but it's still one of my guilty pleasure movies. Seeing it at a young age sets you up for all kinds of nostalgic scenes and one-liners that will never leave your memory. It takes itself with just about the right level of seriousness and the special effects are still worth mentioning despite being decades old.

After watching the new sequel it's made me realize that this movie is classic in comparison. It's not the Mona Lisa but I'd argue that it's better than finger painting any day.

It can be considered awful in many levels but I still love it. One of the first movies I saw in theatres along with Jurassic Park.

@SaimonlesS you took the words out of my mouth. If the president of United States is the hero in any movie, prepare yourself for a bunch of ridiculous clichés and I love my country scenes.. It's also bizarre that the movie try to show that it is a global problem, with aliens all around, but only Americans fight them and not any American, but the President! LOL

Cheese. Ultra-convenient explosions, manipulative tiresome score, handsomely scowling beautiful people delivering cheese in their deepest voice. Random suits with cigars. Mr. President. Too long. Epic cheese with extra cheese. And what is the point of throwing in countless references to classic films that are the opposite of this movie on so many levels?

I have been going through some of my childhood classics with my 10 year old for the past few months like Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, Titanic, Armageddon etc and yesterday night was Independence Day night.

He of course liked it a lot and I could see he was genuinely interested and excited, but nothing compared to me! This is one of my all time guilty pleasures, have seen this movie probably between 20-30 times since I was first blown away in the cinema as a 12 year old. While some of my childhood classics like Armageddon, are so bad they automaticaly become good, this one is just pure awesomeness through and through. Never gets old.
