The Fable Muncher
Overall it's a rather simplistic film. A story of revenge bookended with a philosophical notion. However, its simplicity is not meant to be a criticism. Everything is on the surface with this film, but what it does is push it so far to the limits that you can't help but be captivated despite its conventional story. It's a compelling and rather unique piece of work. The film may not say much in the end, but what it does is present its tale beautifully.

First off, like several comments here have said, this film should be watched alone.I personally thought it was a great film. However, some of the camerawork was a little distracting. For example, the spinning was very obnoxious to me. At the same time I liked it because it highlighted how crazy and out of control the events in the movie were.
I do think the scenes in the gay club depicting the sexual acts amongst men are important, but at the same time I believe there was too much of it. I think Noe could've cut out a bit, or not show as much, and still have gotten the feeling of intensity through.
Overall, the acting was very on point. It all seemed very realistic including the harshest scene in the movie. That scene made me cover a my mouth in horror, cringe with pain, feel pure hate, and even get a little teary-eyed.
The plot itself is rather simplistic, but the emphasis is more on how the story was captured and presented.
I thought this movie presented a story that serves as the perfect example at how cruel the world is, and how easy it is for an individual's life to be turned upside down & wrecked.

I seem to have something for movies that are totally horrible or controversial, but justify their content through subverting norms and quality production values. Some films try but fail through overbearing pretention (A Serbian Film), and some could have done with an editor (Enter The Void). This falls somewhere between depressing arthouse and New French Extremity - Gaspar Noe is up there with Haneke and Von Trier in those categories, at least in terms of ambition. The scenes in question are utterly, utterly horrible and stone-cold in their realismLMTR14
watch the first half and turn it off. everything after it ironically RAPES the movie with its idiotic and ignorant irrelevanceLMTR14
my statement really could refer to Death Note as well, lolHippiemans
This film has one of the most disturbing scenes in cinematic history.ShotMarvinInTheFace
What disturbed me the most in the infamous scene, is the moment a stranger walks into the passage (you see him in the background) sees what's happening, but desides not to help and go back up instead... That unknown son of a btchV012

To the few people who will actually read this comment: I definitely recommend this movie, I think it's quite good. The controversial scene aside, I think there's a lot here as a good movie.locovoco
It's like Adam & Eve left the Garden Of Eden, climbed up Brokeback Mountain, and then got a little Memento for all of their travails!Skradtim
This movie is very sick, twisted, and not for everyone. It is still an awesome and very unique movie. The ending is extremely funny in a dark way. You may have to watch twice to understand it. The best part is probably in the beginning with the fire extinguisher. The movie lives up to its name ‘Irreversible’ in more then one way. Very creative.essaywhu
It’s odd, because so many are saying the scene in the film is so disturbing which it is, but I had heard about it beforehand, so I was expecting it. What shocked me was the end of the brutal fight in the gay club, which I thought was even more graphic. The film itself is something of a masterpiece, especially with the structure of the storyline, with the final half of the film completely different from the first half, which was sleazy and frankly a little disgusting. The second half is more playful, with themes of love and friendship.Showing items 16 – 29 of 29
