Funny to read this… I’m Russian and a have Russian movies that I don’t like. I have American movies that I hate etc. But it doesn’t mean that I don’t like all movies of one country. You don’t like this comedy. Ok, no problems, it’s your opinion. But don’t say that someone gives 10 because it’s Russian or American or Turkish… This movie knows everyone in Russia, everyone quotes from this movie. We have a new site like imdb where everyone can rate books and movies from 1 to 10. For the moment 41948 persons in this site voted for “Ivan Vasilevich” and it has 8,5 (in imdb voted only 3213 persons). And many American movies have high rate too. Because we like them and not because it’s Russian or American.

Russian, Turkish and Indian really do seem to love their (bad) film industries.

While I'm not a fan of either Turkish or Indian film industries I find it very odd that Russian one (that has produced directors and films of the highest caliber) is being put into the same category based on a few comedies that are popular in Russia or the former Eastern block. This particular film was huge and is still loved and enjoyed by many people. This does not mean it's great (I don't even like it), but to say the entire Russian film industry is bad is just ridiculous. There are some amazing Russian films out there. Similarly I would hardly call the whole Indian or Turkish film industries as bad even if I dislike most films from these particular countries.

I enjoyed this movie. But you have to appreciate it for what it is: a cheesy Soviet comedy from the early 70s. If you don't like cheese, don't watch.

Absolutely silly stuff. But I can well imagine that it was like the bible for an entire generation of teens in the USSR.
Just like Blues Brothers and Rocky Horror Picture Show were over here.

First complete list. I think the film is not worse than the average Peter Sellers. In my opinion, it's a 7/10. I'm not sure if it really deserves the top 50 list for sci-fi, but nonetheless it's an acceptable film for what it is.

I'm still convinced that the only reason this movie is on any top-lists is because it's been mistaken with Robert Zemeckis' Back to the Future. That being said, it was an interesting movie. Lots of slapstick comedy and absurd exaggeration. The fact that it's a Soviet movie means it contains a few uncanny elements that as an American I found interesting. It's a screwball comedy made with heart and a very, very low budget. At the very least it will be a unique experience for many American viewers.

I love how people on this site seem to think if they say it is a bad movie, that what they say is fact. I have not seen this movie. But if and see at and like/hate it,it doesn't change the fact that movies are, have been and always will be subjective.

I am amazed by the negative comments here. I guess the humor just doesn't translate. Maybe some things in this movie are only funny, if you at least somewhat know how life was back in USSR. I find this movie great, as do most russian speakers. A classic.

Very to difficult to appreciate the humor unless you speak Russian and are familiar with the culture, otherwise I can see how it can be viewed as cheesy. Personally, I love this film.

Really liked this movie. Quirky, cheesy and over the top, but still fairly enjoyable.
