Pretty great. Certainly one of the best films I've seen this year. The screenplay, the performances, the simple and unobtrusive manner it is filmed. Its spot on, great cinema. It also reminds me of why I love great foreign films. They provide a window into a culture I am not accustomed to and the best of them, i.e. this film, don't explain everything to you but instead are intelligent enough to give you just enough information for you to figure out the cultural differences that make this drama work.

This is the type of movie that could have been made anywhere. That is actually a plus, because you relate to the characters. The real positive thing about this movie is each character has a good reason why they are in their tragic situation. You root for each character. spoiler

To anyone who liked this, also watch "About Elly, 2009' by the same director. It's terrific.

Gladly sidestepping most of the preceding seven pages worth of redundant comment about the merits of American film and the fairness of the IMDB- I finally caught this tonight and am very pleased to say it's one of the best films I've seen this year and justified in having a place on the top 250, not only because it's brilliantly performed by the whole cast, morally challenging and impressively complex, expertly paced and shot and fascinating from start to finish but because it managed to get made at all in the face of the Iranian government's strict censorship laws. It's a terrific insight into the social and ethical dilemmas of the country, and a work of art in the process. For anyone interested in world cinema- unreservedly recommended.

So intense, so powerfull. They captured the emotions perfectly and it really fells like a real situation. It's really sad but also really beautiful. More than a separation this movie is about love and family.

So lucky to catch up this film on the big screen this week. It's an enjoyable roller-coaster drama. What I love about Iranian films is they are so natural & unpretentious. A Separation is one of them. No wonder it won Oscar for Best Foreign Film. There's no antagonist in this film, they are the protagonist in their own perspectives. I love it! None of these characters are black or white, they are all grey. Each character gives his / her contribution and mistake to complicate the situation. After all, when a married couple decided to separate, everything always gets ugly

"I can't help but wonder if it would be getting this much praise if it was American and not Iranian."

You act like this is the first Iranian film to ever be screened in the US. Iranian cinema has been a strong force releasing great films consistently since the late 80s. It is one of those great Iranian films therefore people praise it.

"This is the type of movie that could have been made anywhere."

Not really. The political subtext makes this an Iranian film. Sure a film featuring a couple with martial problems could be made anywhere, but that would be limiting this movie.

I'd been meaning to watch this for years, and I am so glad that I finally did. the performances were great, the framing of the shots made for a very intense, claustrophobic feel. But more than that the screenplay and character development was incredible. The film was super effective at making you realise that everyone is really trying to do things out of mostly honourable and reasonable intentions. Nobody is black and white. really liked it.

Really great movie. Very realistic, complex characters that were easy to relate to. No one was a good guy or bad guy...everyone had their great sides and their flawed sides. Honest portrayal of the complexity of human emotions when caught up in dire circumstances. Superb!
