   At times, one of the most emotionally devastating experiences I've had in some time at the cinema. What starts out as a seemingly fairly straightforward story - albeit beautifully told, with the same humanism and attention to detail which has become the hallmark of the director - continuously subverts the viewer's expectations again and again.
   
   It really is no wonder it won the prize for best script at Cannes; the plotting is meticulous, constantly introducing new pieces of information which completely change everything. Hell, even some of the musical cues are eventually revealed to have a very significant and profound diegetic meaning.
   
   Speaking of which, the score, by the great, sadly passed Ryuichi Sakamoto, to whom the film is also dedicated, is of course beautiful as well, as always when he's involved. 1 month 4 weeks ago
