As the film progresses, you slowly give yourself to the characters and the story bit by bit until you become entirely sympathetic and involved with the whole movie, and that's what makes the film sentimentally important.
We begin to see parts of the true theme and meaning of the film become more visible until it finally fills us like water fills an barren river after a dam is broken.
Its not really the film as cinema that makes this spectacular, but the film as a moving statement, a combination of emotions and as an analysis of human connection that allow us to evaluate its romantic (both in the literary and emotive sense) premise and relate it to ourselves.
That idea of connection and understanding is so unique, this film presents itself as a rather original film yet still able to employ comedic elements to keep its unconventional story at pace.
An underrated spiritually significant wonder of a film with a balanced script, surprisingly sensitive acting and ironically creative directing, this film is a modern intrigue in a time filled with dearths of internal human understanding.

Wow! So worth tracking down. Not sure there is much I can add that hasn't already been said - just a really enjoyable film. For me, the very essence of great cinema. It works on so many levels. Sure, like all great movies, it's not perfect, but it reaches out to the viewer both as entertainment and as a work of art. The story works and I can live with the imperfections.

What is most amazing is that it is one of the rare, well-rated IMDb titles that has many more votes from non-US viewers. This isn't surprising since it hasn't exactly been distributed stateside. What other great films are we missing under the avalanche of pablum provided at the local cineplex? But at least there are ways to find great movies like this - like everything in life, all it takes is a bit of work.

Wonder what was submitted by South Korea for the Academy Award Best Foreign Language Film category that year - can't imagine anything better was on offer, but guess there was ... oh well, the vagaries of international cinema politics, etc.

PS - Anyone have a recipe for Black Bean Noodles? Gotta try it!

Very original. You can be alone and a castaway within society. I kept thinking about Tom Hanks, but I think I like this movie more.
