Intense, dark, surreal noir that pushes boundaries and goes in unexpected directions (even the opening credits are unusual). Starring Meeker as one of the least likable antiheroes I've seen to date, the film features a unique MacGuffin, some surprisingly disturbing sequences, lots of pimp-slapping, and a hell of an ending.
If you are avoiding this because you expect a generic, vacuous noir, please give yourself a treat and give this thing a shot. Not only is that part weird, but the editing, the bullshit-filled dialogues, the cuts, some acting. Gives you a reason to wonder why noirs were called B-movies back in the day before the French brainwashed US-Americans into that they were doing "elegant" and "dark" film-making.
The fuck-you attitude this film has makes it way more interesting than most of film-noir clichés I know by now, and certainly infinitely, absolutely more entertaining.
This movie plays like a middle school production of a film noir - depthless characters, witless script and directionless cinematography. Ideal if you need a movie to make fun of a la Mystery Science Theater - it's full of unintentional comedy. Everyone involved has done better work elsewhere, so it's a puzzle to me how so much talent could come together to make such a mess. 2.5/10
