Kong: Skull Island was a hi-octane crazy delight that just proves Gareth Edwards' Godzilla flick - the first film in this same shared universe - was too timid. Skull Island better embraces the cheesy and/or ridiculous aspects of a giant monster film and just has FUN with them. It doesn't hold back on showing the monster(s). It doesn't shrink from making Kong a monstrous ape-man that looks like the model from the original film (as opposed to the giant gorilla of Peter Jackson's remake). It doesn't repeat the story beats of the original, and yet pays tribute to them visually. It uses the end of the Vietnam war as motivation for the characters, metaphorical background (and incomprehensible enemy in the jungle), and a couple of big puns if you think about it (Gorilla warfare or Viet Kong, you choose). And it's visually impressive. Now granted, most of the human characters aren't very well developed, especially those that might continue with the franchise, but by casting recognizable actors who bring baggage with them, the film avoids Godzilla's similar failing, where its less well-known actor just comes across as generic and boring. But Brie Larson's empathy comes through those giant eyes of hers. Casting sometimes goes a long way. Anyway, aren't you there for the giant monsters?! On that front, Skull Island definitely delivers. I was smiling all the way through.

Great visual effects. Lots of action. Funny mostly because of John C Reilly.
it also has some weird holes, like Tom Hiddleston's character. He pulls up samurai sword skills out of nowhere...But I guess its not important in this kind of movie.
Entertaining.

As movies about giant monsters fighting each other go, I thought it was pretty much perfect. Loved every minute of it.

If you enjoy a modern take on giant monster CGI action adventure nonsense, this is as great as they get. Much fun, creative angles, spectacular effects. (See it in the best possible medium on the biggest screen, and do it LOUD!) Also a nice cast, a department in which comparable flicks often lack.
Best US kaiju with Pacific Rim.

This is what a blockbuster should be. Great fun, really enjoyed it.

Great cinematography (some beautiful shots of Kong in the sunset, behind fire and with the island backdrop), awesome visual effects, script isn’t special but does the job, great cast (maybe to many actually), nice decor and setting, good humor and enjoyable action. And John C Reilly is awesome as ever.

As you may infer from the fairly low favourite:check ratio, this isn't likely to be many people's favourite movie, but it is quite a spectacular looking movie, with very believable visuals, a fair (if archetypical) performance by the leads (although Reilly really does most of the work) and all round bloody good giant monster entertainment. There's something primal about fighting off a giant spider, after all.

If you liked Pacific Rim, you'll probably like this one too.

incredibly and surprisingly bad. so boring, the characters were awful. the only good thing was the animation but not even that could save the movie as a whole. terrible

Very entertaining. And possibly the best rock soundtrack of any movie in the 21st century...

Forgetable, major plot holes and Jackson's character is annoying and weak…….but if you leave you're brain at the door....it is entertaining with some great effects.

Much better than Godzilla but still mostly a popcorn flick to the core, they seriously learned from the mistakes and missteps in Godzilla, though.
