Honestly, Jodorowsky's most fully-realised and meaningful film. In part an autobiographical gloss on the themes, situations, and ideas that populate his other works; in part a profound meditation on the relation between the individual and history, the absurd stream of events that shape us and propel us through life, and the nature of mortality and our perspective on the world (and of our self) as a child versus an adult. Although even more episodic and fragmented than Jodorowsky's earlier works, this ultimately works to the film's benefit, and each sequence and at-times-perplexing creative decision is indispensable to the film's larger narrative. (For instance, the viewer experiences a somewhat jarring tonal shift when the film suddenly begins following the father's character halfway through, but this is representative of the onset of adulthood, and not only Young Alejandro's newfound ability to identify with and understand his father, but his essential transformation into that Other to whom he had always been opposed.) And indeed, perhaps due to the film's exemplary production value, I found many of the images contained therein to be the artist's most haunting and provocative yet.

In short, this is the sort of film that you won't walk away from feeling blown away or entirely satisfied, but that is only because you haven't given your mind sufficient time to analyse and interpret it. For days and weeks after, you will find your thoughts continually returning to the film, and if you allow them to, slowly, gradually, all the pieces will begin to coalesce.

fantastically poetic. A true dance of reality, what is facts, what is ideals? How do we remember them, and how can you show that in a film? What would we do without poetry.

Its like Jodorowsky had a lot of ideas with no relation between them and mixed it in one big movie that start really bad and end ridiculous
