What a great comedy movie, a film of two very different halves and both parts were awesome, the way that Roberto Benigni plays his role is incredible

I think using 1) the fact that the film has distinct halves and 2) it's admittedly soft depiction of concentration camps as criticisms isn't fair. Those two elements are key facets of the film. The beginning focus on a romantic and comical man, with offhand mentions of brewing unrest, is alongside the heavier concentration camp half in order to illustrate that life is not all bad. One point of the film is that the bad cannot overpower all of the good in life, hence "life is beautiful." As for the almost whimsical concentration camp half: I do get why some are annoyed by it, but you have to remember that spoiler

So the point of the second half is basically "ignorance can sometimes be bliss," and whether that's a viewpoint with which you agree or not, I think it's communicated quite well.

All this said: I think the film is just good. Visually it's nothing special. A lot of the acting is overly hammy, especially from the mother. A few scenes in the first half with Guido were badly acted too, but for most of the first half and almost all of the second half his performance was funny, energetic and endearing. On a pure physical comedy level, the film's quite successful. Simple but well-crafted narratively.

I've avoided this for years, afraid it would be schmaltzy, "Don't worry, be happy" bullshit, and now I'm sorry. If the character Chaplin played in The Great Dictator had made it to a concentration camp, this would be the movie. A lovely film that deserves all the praise it's gotten.

After watching this film you will feel like someone just took away a part of your heart through your throat. I remember laughing so much in the first half, but after watching second half as well, I cant even recollect the first half scenes which I laughed at. At first, Guido seems like a joker, but then slowly you start understanding him, appreciating him.... And you just get covered in a cloud of gloominess and its as if the cloud got generated from inside you and is all around you... Maybe it will take some time for me to get over it ... Sorry :(

Full of heart, at times very funny,it appeals to the very basic fauture of life which we forget-HAPPINESS. Well truly, life is beautiful as we see it as the main protaganist explains in a way i cannot expect . We audience are his child in this epic tale and he continue to taught us throughout the movie

Such a beautiful film and what a powerful ending . 10 on 10 .
