"A unique documentary on 'The Zone', a wasteland just outside Paris and a refuge to lower classes from the midth of 19th century to the 40's where they could build shelters and live mostly out of sight from the society. Its name comes from the latin "zone non aedificandi' (i.e. not to be built) referring to a 250 meter-width strip of land just outside the last fortifications of Paris. At the end of the 19th century some 30.000 people were thought to live permanently on the Zone and many more to attend it for business, either legal for countless ragmen living on wastes of the city, or not which is the reason why the Zone has fascinated so many book or song writers. It was demolished in the 50's to build the Paris beltway." 6 years 11 months ago
