Under the direction of bit actor/B-movie director Griff Furst, here we are at Lake Placid 3. Bringing together a collection of fallen stars and nobodies, it's obviously not a movie to be taken seriously. It is however a money opportunity for the re-branded Syfy as I had said in my review for Lake Placid 2. The budget's gone up a bit and I'm sure that's to account for not one but two "stars."

Michael Ironside was at one time a force with his portrayals of imposing baddies, but he plays the role of town sheriff in LP3. We also get Yancy Butler who is best known as the star of the TV series Witchblade which had a cult following. She fell into legal and drug problems which is a shame and probably never really reached her potential. Unfortunately she hasn't really been able to advance past B-movie parts these days apart from a role in Kick-Ass and Kick-Ass 2.

    Synopsis

It's been one year since the latest croc incident at Lake Placid and crazy old Sadie Bickerman is dead. Her cabin has been passed on to her nephew Nathan Bickerman (Colin Ferguson) and his wife Susan (Kirsty Mitchell). Susan isn't too pleased about staying in the town because of what's happened and she worries about the safety of their son Connor (Jordan Grehs). They plan to leave but decide to hold off and wait before selling so that the housing market in the area can recover. Crocodiles on waterfront property probably isn't too valuable after all. Especially when crocodiles aren't supposed to be there in the first place! Connor himself just wants a pet though and he happily discovers a whole bunch of pets in the lake.

    Review

Smart kid right? His parents, especially his mother, don't want anything to do with the lake and they don't want Connor near the lake either. Connor's father is a zoologist for crying out loud, you'd think he'd know better than to keep a bunch of man-eating crocodiles to himself. Getting over the stupidity of the kid is of course not the biggest hump to get over while watching Lake Placid 2. The same problems from the second TV sequel make some special appearances.

The movie opens to a ridiculous scene of two young teenagers going to the lake for some fun. You can tell that the smartest minds have ensured that you'll stay hooked if you watch it on TV. Before the first commercial break, you get nudity, sex and bloody death! It's like something out of a slasher movie where the fornicating couple get what they deserve.

The acting overall is perhaps a slight step forward on the whole but it's hard to really tell. Michael Ironside makes for an OK presence and even main lead Colin Ferguson isn't too bad in a bland kind of way. Yancy Butler though is a different story though. She plays a character who seems to have had someone piss in her Cheerios every single day of her life. The non-stop sarcasm and biting remarks get old after the second and thirtieth time. Special mention goes to Bianca Ilich as Connor's blonde and inexplicably Russian babysitter. She probably credits going to acting school based on the fact that she walked past an acting school one time. Maybe.

CGI is sort of better but the crocodiles still look like pickles with teeth. Cinematography, if it can be called that is amateurish but there's no point in even going there. Lake Placid 3 ranks about the same as its predecessor. There are a few steps forward as well as some steps backwards. It's not a bad movie that is able to be that "good" bad movie and it's still clearly coasting on the Lake Placid name. Watch it if you feel like doing something else while a movie is on.
