Great version of the Stevenson novella-- Berrault's dual performance is so great it took me a long while to realize Cordelier and Opale were the same actor. It's less interested in terror than dealing with the petty formalities and hypocrisies that lead to violence and repression in "polite society". The meta intro shows Renoir had a little Hitchcock in him. Carax's beastly Monsieur Merde was probably influenced by this film. That alone makes it worth watching. Very recommended.
