Another of Chabrol's biting social satires dressed -but more importantly scored- as Hitchhockian thriller. Let's call it a neo-noir of manners. The wealthy using outcasts like playthings, unable to see the building resentment that will come back to bite their butt. Some Talented Mr. Ripley stuff here too. Pretty good film.
EDIT-- found this doozy of a quote in Wikipedia, from M. Chabrol himself: "It is about the equilibrium of such a relationship, when someone else intervenes about the bargains that people make with each other. And about the rich, the advantage that they have over the poor, their richness. They can buy people, and the poor have to submit, until they revolt, and the only possible revolt is destruction. It is from a Marxist point of view but it is not political at all. I'm sure you cannot make a revolution with a camera. But you can show up all the people and things you dislike." So... eat the rich? 1 year 8 months ago -

Surprised that this isn't on any official lists. Anyway, it's a pretty decent film, one of the stand-out Chabrols that I've seen. 9 years 11 months ago
