It works better when we're just accompanying Keaton and not trying to "understand" her with lame pop psychology 1=1 explanations about why she is the way she is. That goes for almost every character in the film, from Richard Gere's overcompensating mama's boy to Berenger's "don't call me gay" crazy person. I don't think it is anti-sex (it's more about the world not wanting to give her the same freedom it affords men) or homophobic (the gay people we meet in the bar look pretty happy and carefree-- Berenger is just self-hating and delusional). I do think it is lurid and sensationalist, plus too long and self-important. It also has that type of hysteric acting I associate with some New Hollywood directors, where screaming and running around equals realism and grittiness. Keaton's performance however must be one of the best of all time, so it has that going for it, at least. 2 years 1 month ago
