The reason why John Cassavetes is so indispensable, why he's one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, is that he threw every ounce of life he had into each one of his films. It's never that he made films or profit or even necessarily for fun, but simply because he HAD to. There was this burning desire to express his emotions through film. And while this may not be his technically "best" work, it's certainly him at his most vulnerable. Even with a much larger budget than usual, this film feels as raw as any that came before it. Here, more so than in past films, he clearly expresses his thoughts on life, love, and how we hold each other up through pain. It's an absolute thing of beauty, and shows just why he was such a monumental figure.
