This show is a bit of a mixed bag. I liked the extended cast and the music and overall style a lot but the sudden change mid-season kind of made the second half a letdown which was kind of the problem with Daredevil s.2 as well. The main problem with the second half is that it doesn't really fit the same theme as the first and the second half is told a little backwards. Also, the second half's villain has a really dumb costume at the very end, which kind of reminded me of the weird costume reveal at the end of Daredevil s.1. I'll still watch next season because I can totally see them combining Luke Cage and Iron Fist (since they are best friends in the comics) into a single show, which could make for a fresh change. 7 years 5 months ago

Season 1: Luke Cage's first season tracks the birth of a vigilante, someone who only wants to be left alone and lay low, but hears and heeds the call to do what the cops can't, and becoming a folk hero in the process. The Harlem setting is well used, with a cool R&B and hip-hop soundtrack integrated with style, and the theme of black self-determination comes across strongly in both Luke's journey, and that of his always interesting enemies, even if there's the sense that we trade down in that regard. The women of the show are especially great, whether that's the smart'n'sexy Misty Knight, the ruthless council woman played by Alfre Woodard, or Night Nurse in her biggest role yet. I also enjoyed the winks at the comics' Power Man and the overall tribute to blaxploitation heroes from which Luke sprang. This is one Netflix Marvel series that didn't feel like it was treading water at 13 episodes... I'm a big fan!

Season 2: I don't feel like Luke Cage is really the protagonist of his second season. I mean, yes, it does reposition him for what might have been a real gray zone of a third season, but he gets outshined by almost everyone else. Misty is always cool as hell and has her own journey. Mariah Stokes becomes as bad as they come and is well supported by Shades and her own daughter, while Bushmaster provides a second dose of villainy as a Jamaican gangster who has powers on par with Luke. And because there are so many threads to follow, Luke gets left in the dust, is all. Of course, this show continues to be the best-looking of the Marvel Netflix lot, not only because it dares play in the sunlight, but because its stars look so fabulous while everyone looks so haggard in Daredevil and Jessica Jones (if I don't mention Iron Fist it's to spite him for showing up and delivering the most boring episode of the season). It's also the show with all the great music. And all the violence - in line with its blaxploitation feel, it's much more violent than the other shows. Season 2 provides a good conclusion, but I fear the lead was never the main attraction.
