Uneven - but there are moments of excellence...as well as some very cliched stuff. Perhaps the most mixed film quality wise I've seen in ages. 11 years 11 months ago -

A very touching movie based on the true story of Sam Childers.
One of the main reasons for me to like this movie was definately Gerard Butler's performance. He was up to the task of portraying an initially violent and dislikable character who gets into serious trouble, finally finds God and goes to Africa to help people - especially children. The character was so driven, so obsessed by his mission... it was delightful and sad at the same time to watch him trust more and more in God and in a good cause and later despair and feel shattered by all the violence and the scale of the task of making a difference.
The director stated in an interview that this movie wasn't so much about Sam Childers saving people in Africa, it was more about Africa saving him, making him a better man and helping him find a meaning in life. I really agree with this and it's another reason why this is such a good film.
Additionally, many scenes were beautifully written, some of them made me cry, also thanks to all the children who really were amazing in their roles. 10 years 7 months ago
