Almodóvar was masterful from the get-go, but it’s undeniable that his craft has only gotten better through the years. What he has lost is the anarchy and outrageousness of his youth. This is a good film but every character takes the twists and turns of the narrative with such stoicism and emotional maturity that the drama doesn’t work as well as it could. The romantic aspect spoiler for example promises much more than it fulfills. The less said about the political angle of the film the better (admirable as it is). It doesn’t gel, no matter what parallels one can think of to link it to the actual story. The fact that the film decides to use it as an ending (complete with a meaningful quote and allegorical fantasy shot) is emblematic of how Almodóvar doesn’t quite understand what is engaging in his own movie. Or maybe he just didn’t know how to wrap it up. Anyhow— everyone is great in this. It just ends up feeling a bit half-baked. Perhaps I miss the un-prestigiousness of his (now much) earlier films. Mildly recommended Almo-joint.

Very good, not great but captivating throughout with a nice side plot... Can see the parallels to it... although also could be viewed as tacked on
